Messi Says Goodbye to Argentina With One Last Masterpiece

Lionel Messi has played his final game for Argentina, and fittingly, the greatest player of his generation left the stage with another reminder of exactly why he is the GOAT.

There was no fairytale script left to write for Lionel Messi.

He had already won the World Cup. He had already lifted the Copa América. He had already broken virtually every major scoring and appearance record available to an Argentine footballer.

But when Argentina welcomed Benin to the Estadio Monumental for Messi’s international farewell, the 39-year-old somehow found another chapter.

Argentina won 3-0, with Messi scoring one goal and creating two more.

Nicolás Otamendi opened the scoring after Messi supplied the assist, before Messi then set up Nico Paz for Argentina’s second.

Then came the moment everyone inside the Monumental had been waiting for.

Messi stepped up from the penalty spot and calmly converted to make it 3-0.

One final goal.

One final celebration.

One final roar of “Messi! Messi! Messi!”

And just like that, an extraordinary 21-year international career came to an emotional close.

The numbers are ridiculous

Messi finishes his Argentina career as the country’s record appearance maker and all-time leading goalscorer.

His final international record stands at 208 appearances, 126 goals and 70 assists, according to FIFA.

Those numbers tell only part of the story.

Messi leaves Argentina having won the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima, the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2024 Copa América. He also won the FIFA U-20 World Cup and Olympic gold with Argentina’s youth and Olympic teams.

And then there are the individual honours.

Messi is the only player in history to win two FIFA World Cup Golden Balls, taking the award after both the 2014 and 2022 tournaments.

In Qatar, he did something even more significant. He combined the Golden Ball with the World Cup trophy, scoring seven goals as Argentina finally conquered the world.

From Argentina’s biggest question mark to its greatest hero

The irony of Messi’s Argentina story is that it was not always this beautiful.

For years, the pressure was enormous.

He was compared constantly with Diego Maradona. Every defeat became another question about whether Messi could reproduce his Barcelona brilliance in the blue and white shirt.

There were painful Copa América defeats. There was the 2014 World Cup final loss. There was the 2016 Copa América final heartbreak that briefly pushed Messi into international retirement.

Then everything changed.

The 2021 Copa América became the breakthrough.

The Finalissima followed.

Then Qatar 2022.

Messi didn’t simply win the World Cup. He was the central character in one of the greatest tournaments of his career, scoring twice in the final against France and eventually lifting the trophy Argentina had been desperate to give him.

By then, the argument had changed.

Argentina no longer asked whether Messi could deliver.

Argentina simply enjoyed watching him play.

And then came one final night

The Benin match was never really about the result.

It was about saying thank you.

More than 85,000 supporters packed the Monumental to watch their captain wear the Argentina shirt for what was expected to be the final time.

Messi assisted Otamendi.

He assisted Paz.

He scored from the penalty spot.

And when the final whistle arrived, teammates, opponents and fans gathered around him.

The 21-year journey was over.

Messi was visibly emotional as he reflected on what representing Argentina had meant to him.

For a player who spent years carrying the weight of an entire football nation, there was something fitting about his final appearance being less about expectation and more about celebration.

The GOAT leaves the building

Football will continue.

Argentina will produce another No.10. Another superstar will eventually become the country’s next great hope.

But replacing Lionel Messi is not really the point.

Players can inherit the shirt.

They cannot inherit the story.

Messi leaves Argentina as a World Cup winner, a two-time Copa América champion, a record goalscorer, a record appearance holder and the only player to win two World Cup Golden Balls.

He leaves with 208 caps, 126 goals and 70 assists.

Most importantly, he leaves having finally turned one of football’s most complicated love stories into something beautiful.

For years, Argentina wanted Messi to prove he belonged among the greatest.

He answered.

Then he won everything.

The GOAT has said goodbye to Argentina. And there will probably never be another goodbye quite like it.
