Why Esther Okoronkwo’s Response to Racist Abuse Is Winning Hearts Worldwide

Super Falcons striker Esther Okoronkwo has responded with grace after facing a wave of racist abuse on Instagram over allegations that cash was stolen from players’ wallets during Nigeria’s stay at the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca, Morocco.

Following her claims, several social media users flooded her page with racist insults, with some comparing Black people to monkeys and sharing primate images.

The abuse came after reports that several Super Falcons players alleged a total of $1,220 was stolen from their rooms while they were away ahead of the 2026 WAFCON final. Rather than respond with anger, Okoronkwo shared a powerful message on her Instagram Story:

Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that. We move forward with pride, unity, and determination. See you on the pitch.”

According to the allegations, Okoronkwo lost $700, while captain Rasheedat Ajibade reportedly lost $200. Osinachi Ohale and Halimatu Ayinde allegedly lost $100 each, while Joy Omewa lost $120.

As of the time of reporting, neither the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca, Moroccan authorities, nor Meta had publicly responded to the theft allegations or the racist attacks.

Despite the controversy, the Super Falcons remain focused on their WAFCON campaign, choosing resilience over hate as they continue their quest for another African title. šŸ‡³šŸ‡¬šŸ¦…
