Atlético Madrid have done business with Barcelona before. So why has Julián Álvarez become the player they simply refuse to sell to Barça? The answer has less to do with money and everything to do with rivalry, trust and pride.
Atlético Madrid is refusing to sell Julián Álvarez to Barcelona because the club views the situation as a matter of dignity and principle rather than money. Their board has unanimously ruled out any negotiation with Barcelona, stating there is a “0% chance” of a transfer and that the player “will never, ever” go there.

The main reasons they have given
- Alleged unethical conduct by Barcelona. Atlético has accused Barcelona of tapping up Álvarez (negotiating with him and his representatives behind the club’s back) during the previous season, including while the two teams were still competing against each other in the Champions League and Copa del Rey. They describe this as “pressure and harassment,” a campaign of “lies and half-truths,” and a lack of ethics, transparency, and professionalism. Atlético has filed complaints with FIFA and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF)
- They do not want to sell their star player to a direct rival. Álvarez is considered Atlético’s best player, and the club says there is no adequate replacement available on the market. Strengthening a La Liga and European rival (who knocked them out of competitions last season) is seen as sporting suicide. They have taken the same stance toward Real Madrid. They point to his €500 million release clause and have said they would not sell him even for €200 million.
- They are not under financial pressure to sell. Recent investment has given them stability, so they do not need to cash in.
Atlético has said they are open to “standard transfer market negotiations” conducted ethically and respectfully with other clubs (Arsenal has been linked), but they have drawn a hard line specifically against Barcelona. The player himself has said he wants to leave to “fulfill his dream,” which is widely understood to mean joining Barcelona, and he has faced backlash from Atlético fans as a result.
