Chelsea Reveal Why Enzo Maresca Left Midway Through the 2025/26 Season

Chelsea have released a detailed statement explaining the circumstances behind Enzo Maresca’s shock departure midway through the 2025/26 campaign, admitting the disruption had a major impact on what they described as a “hugely disappointing” season.

The club acknowledged that changing head coach during the season was never part of the plan, but insisted it became unavoidable after Maresca made it clear that his future ambitions lay elsewhere.

According to Chelsea, the first signs of uncertainty emerged in the autumn of 2025, when Maresca informed the club that there was a possibility he could succeed Pep Guardiola at Manchester City at the end of the season.

Chelsea said it soon became evident that the Italian coach was determined to pursue that opportunity, despite being under a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge.

The situation reached its breaking point in December 2025, when Maresca unexpectedly resigned from his role. Chelsea admitted they felt “let down”, believing that both his focus and commitment had shifted toward another club shortly after taking charge.

In the statement, the club stressed that no team wants to replace its manager halfway through a season. However, with Maresca unwilling to continue until the end of the campaign, Chelsea said they had no option but to accept his resignation in order to protect the interests of the players, supporters and the club.

Chelsea also confirmed that confidential settlement agreements have been reached with both Manchester City and Maresca. As part of those agreements, compensation has been paid by Manchester City, while Maresca has also agreed to compensate Chelsea. The financial terms remain undisclosed.

The statement offers supporters the club’s first full explanation of one of the most dramatic managerial exits in recent Chelsea history, bringing clarity to a saga that significantly disrupted the Blues’ 2025/26 season.
