DR Congo team were very disciplined as they held Portugal to a draw. This is the team’s only appearance since 1974, the nation – then known as Zaire – managed to hold their own against the European Giant, Portugal in Houston to open Group K.
Just five minutes into the first half, Joao Neves headed home for Portugal, but Wissa responded with a header of his own just before the half time whistle.
DR Congo’s excellent five-man defence stifled the Portugal team for long spells, with Portugal struggling to create clear-cut opportunities and failing to make the most of their 75% possession.
However, Cristiano Ronaldo, having become the oldest outfield player to start a World Cup match at the age of 41 years and 132 days, will have to wait a little longer before getting his first goal of the tournament.
