Mexico defeats South Africa in the World Cup opening match

The 2026 World Cup has officially started. The 23rd edition of the World Cup which is expected to go for one month and half had the opening match played yesterday in Mexico City stadium as the co-host Mexico took on South Africa.

Mexico had the first win of the tournament with an important 2:0 win against South Africa in a dramatic game that saw 2 goals and 3 red cards. Mexico’s Julian Quinones scored the first goal in the 9th minute of the game while Raul Jiminez added the second in the 67th minute to secure all three points for the host.

However, the football match took some dramatic turn early when the South African midfielder Sphephelo Sithole received the first red card of the tournament after a last man foul on Brian Gutierezz in the 49th minute of the match, while substitute Themba Zwane got another red card in the 84th minute for violent conduct after a VAR intervention. Mexico’s Dogso also got a red card after a tackle on South Africa’s Khuliso Mudau in the 92nd minute of the game.

Mexico will play South Korea in thier next group stage game while South Africa will take on Czechia.
